Silph – Release the Beast

Nearly a century and a half ago, mankind feared nuclear war would bring an end to our civilization, and usher in a new age of radioactivity, death, decay; and finish the sixth mass extinction that humans started when they first began to hunt. Humans successfully averted such catastrophe, and paved the way to a new secession of devastation caused by out destructive behavior. Greed takes any form, and the more subtle, the more destructive and widespread it is.

In the 21st century, prevalent disasters dealt endless blows to cities and nations. The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami; Hurricane Katrina, the 2010 Haiti quake, the 2011 Japan tsunami, the 2015 New England blizzards, Hurricane Tamara (the end of New York City), the Great North American Whiteout winterstorms of 2017-2019, the Second Dustbowl from 2031-2046 that destroyed most American food production. Hundreds of events could be listed.

Despite nature's unending wrath, human numbers still exploded across the globe, bringing all the problems to far greater levels than ever before. Depopulation returned as an idea but remained relegated to margin by what moral still existed among the powers that be.
In the 2090's, Silph Corporation was literally the economic and military backbone of the Pokémon Nation of Isshu. This small country, located on a collection of islands 1500 km east of New Zealand; had become the single most powerful nation in the world in terms of weaponry alone. All thanks to Silph's signature device, the pokéball (See articles 'Handheld Weapons' and 'Design and Function' in the 2988: 365 edition of Crunch of the Future Today!).

Despite how pokéballs transformed Isshuan society in its entirety, sale of pokéball technology to the outside world was forbidden by the government, despite huge offers of money, trade, alliances and friendships with several warmongering hungry nations eager to use this weapon.

Until last year, the Isshuan government had no desire to open up this country's borders to the outside world whatsoever. No one or nothing allowed in or out. For decades anyone who attempted to get past the naval armadas and undersea fortifications that surrounded the islands was killed without question. Smuggling was big business and due to the risks of being captured, goods (including illegally modified pokéballs), sold for very high profit that fueled the Pokémon Nation's underground economy until the ultimate crackdown began in the late 80's.

The national 'self independence' closed door policy was hardly ever opened at all in official terms. Newly leaked documents from Silph reveal the hidden truth about Isshu's lucrative international business and the unprecedented ramifications Silph could have on the entire world.

A Silph executive was recorded as he quoted the use of pokéballs world wide as a final solution to the world's problems, which he viewed as the rest of humanity. The exec, a Mr. John Salvow, was subsequently fired an executed when the recording was leaked to the press. However, the business ventures he helped instigate proceeded forward.
New documents show an extensive story of which CotF Magazine can only summarize within the pages allotted for this article. It should be graciously noted that much of the information was provided anonymously, for lives were at stake as it was brought forward.
After decades of "turtling" as a fortified hermit nation, the government had decided to open the door a crack, wide enough for Silph Corporation to be secretly authorized to begin exporting pokéballs to favorable clients, while both the government and Silph maintained a firm moral position on national independence and separation from "the decay and rot" of human civilization.

The permission from the government also granted Silph special powers to conduct its business in any way desirable, however, the government strictly dictated that Silph remain "in 100% control of every single pokéball to exist outside Isshu's borders,"
Under these terms, the directors and masters of Silph saw immense opportunity, rather than sell other nations (or private entities) pokéballs for the most money, they offered non-negotiable packages of extensive services include production and use of the deadly devices by Silph personnel.

Over the years, the company raked in billions by selling a vast line of less dangerous products composed of technology completely separate from pokéball tech. Silph's accountants kept the profit separate from the Isshuan economy, and used it for weapons development, and to transform Silph from a mere pokéball factory into a massive military entity, all in order to produce and use pokéballs in the service of their clients.
Within a decade, Silph may have declared itself a nation, given the powers it had. Silph had its' own economy, infrastructure, population born and raised specifically to serve the company; and networks. The only connection between Silph and Isshu was that its top brass composed of fanatically loyal party members. Despite the company carried out its services at the beck and call of its clients, Silph remained the entity in control; something none of its' clients liked, despite all the dirty work Silph pilots and soldiers didn't hesitate to carry out.

Such services included mass murder via pokéball. Specially designed pokéballs captured their victims and then self-destructed. Nicknamed the 'doom' ball, the first generation captured their victims and then exploded like bombs. Newer doomballs captured their victims and then self-destructed by imploding, releasing energy that destroyed the circuitry and interior of the pokéball, while the shell contained the explosion.
While many clients placed orders for Silph to simply capture people and usher in a new era of slavery, war mongering nations; hungry for resources simply wanted entire populations removed- permanently.

With Silph there was no need for guns, bombs, or the political hubbub that could be moulded and modified to tolerate the presence of conquered people and the occupiers. In 2089, Silph Air Squad 66; a fleet of 82 bombers, carried out a raid on two overpopulated cities in Ajikistan. Air Squad 66 dumped roughly 18 million doomballs on the city of Lutak alone. Doomballs are designed to withstand a fall of up to 2500 feet without taking damage from hitting the ground. Doomballs were programmed to capture any living thing that moved, then self destruct. In debrief reports, pilots reported seeing countless flashes of bright lights as millions were captured over several days. Even after the air force had left, pokeballs strewn about the city continued to capture people that walked about. Weary survivors lived in fear and considered each footstep a life-or-death decision.

Eventually, Silph forces moved in and cleaned up the destroyed pokeballs for recycling. The dead did not even exist- they were reduced to atomic particles that dispersed into the air when the doom balls self destructed.
Other pokéballs are also in use even for civilians world wide. The concept of human Pokémon slavery had been popularized by marketers, and pokéballs were leased for a single price to the wealthy citizens.

Today, Silph remains a force to be reckon with and has given Isshu an impeccable upperhand in the struggle for power among nations. Regardless, if the Pokémon Nation wants to go on the offensive, say, to claim more territory, Silph will carry out the dirty work of war without a hint of regret.
Needless to say, the beast has been unleashed.
evil knows no bounds, especially when it comes to the corporation that created pokéballs
